The In Ekker CEMO (Desert Military Testing Centre), located in the Hoggar mountains of the Algerian Sahara, was an important base for underground nuclear tests conducted by France between 1961 and 1966, with a total of 13 nuclear tests carried out, including the Béryl test, which was notorious for its leakage of radioactive material.
